At 1,763 metres the Turracher Höhe sits between three mountain lakes and the stone pine forest. We let two places here: the detached Chalet Haus Murmeltier with a tiled stove and the Almzeit chalet apartment with its own sauna – both close to the slopes, ski school and lakes.

The four seasons differ markedly here. Choose when you are coming.
Alpine skiing
43 kilometres of piste of every grade, with full snowmaking.
Ski school
Ski schools and childcare in the village.
Nocky Flitzer in winter
The alpine coaster runs in the snow as well.
Cross-country skiing
Trails around the lakes and across the high plateau.
Snowshoeing and ski touring
Ascents into the Nockberge, some with a mountain guide.
Tobogganing
Toboggan run and hire in the village itself.
Winter walking
Cleared paths around the lakes and across the high plateau, plus marked snowshoe routes.
Snow park
The ski area has its own snow park – part of the 43 kilometres of fully snow-covered piste.
Bad Kleinkirchheim thermal baths
Thermal baths and a second ski area on the far side of the Nockberge – the usual plan for bad weather.
Snow into May
At 1,763 metres the snow lingers. In heavy years there is still some on the north-facing slopes in early May.
Spring skiing
The season usually runs into April. Long days, soft afternoon snow and hardly any queues at the lifts.
The lakes give way
The Turracher See sometimes stays frozen into May. The sound of the ice breaking up is one you do not forget.
The lifts rest
Neither the Panoramabahn nor the Nocky Flitzer runs from mid-April to early June. Come in that window and you should enjoy walking.
Stone pines after rain
The pine forest smells strongest in spring, just after rain. Hard to describe, easy to verify.
The marmots emerge
Late April or early May ends seven months of hibernation. You spot them first on the slopes above the lakes.
The Nockalm road reopens
The panoramic road is closed in winter. When it opens depends on the snow – usually some time in spring.
Mining museum in Turrach
In the village below the pass, the museum recalls the iron-smelting era. A plan for cool days; check opening times first.
Down to Lake Millstatt
While snow still lies up here, spring has arrived at the lake. Barely an hour by car separates the two seasons.
Hiking
From the lake loop to the Nockberge summits above 2,400 m.
Nocky Flitzer
1,600 metres of alpine coaster, running all year.
Nocky's AlmZeit
An adventure loop with seven stations at the top station.
Mountain biking
The six-kilometre Kornock Flowtrail, a jump line and e-bike tours.
Mountain lakes
Turracher See, Schwarzsee and Grünsee – swimming for the hardy.
Pine forest and sunrise tours
Guided early tours with breakfast on the mountain.
Panorama lift to 2,000 metres
The step-free gondola takes a few minutes to the high plateau. Walks, trails and the Nockberge Trail all start up there.
Gemstone and mineral exhibition
On the Three Lakes Trail opposite the Nocky Flitzer: over 500 square metres of gemstones from around the world.
Nockalm road
A 34-kilometre panoramic road with 52 hairpins between Innerkrems and Ebene Reichenau – a classic day out by car or motorbike.
When the bilberries ripen
In September the slopes turn red and bilberries hang between the dwarf shrubs. It becomes hard to make progress on a walk.
Sunrise on the Schoberriegel
About 400 metres of ascent, an hour and a half from the village. Set off early and you will usually have it to yourself.
Gold among the green
The stone pines stay green, the larches turn. In October the forest looks unlike any other time of year.
The Nockberge trail
The stages across the rounded ridges walk best in autumn: cool air, long views, no crowding in the huts.
Until early November
Summer lift operation usually ends on the first weekend of November. By then the first snow has often arrived.
Village fairs and cattle drives
September and October bring celebrations in the villages below the pass. Dates are listed by the tourism board.
The Nockalm road before it closes
52 hairpins in clear air. With the first heavy snow the road shuts for the winter.
Three Lakes Trail
Turracher See, Schwarzsee and Grünsee in one afternoon – in autumn without crowds and with reflections in still water.
Out with the rangers
The Turracher Höhe sits on the edge of the UNESCO Nockberge Biosphere Reserve. Ranger tours and alpine walks run into the autumn.
Your holiday at Turracher Höhe – and where to stay
Ski holiday, hiking holiday, family holiday or a short break with friends: Chalet Haus Murmeltier with its tiled stove and the Almzeit chalet apartment with its own sauna are the base for everything above. Pick your dates and book direct.
The alpine coaster runs all year: around 1,600 metres, three spirals, two jumps, fifteen waves and a bridge – from the Panoramabahn top station down to Turracher Höhe.
The barrier-free combination lift takes you up to the high plateau in a few minutes. The AlmZeit circular trail and the summer toboggan run both start there.
On the Three Lakes trail, opposite the Nocky Flitzer: over 500 square metres of gemstones from around the world alongside finds from the Nock mountains.
Two holiday apartments in the same house in Sattendorf – both with a balcony and lake and mountain views. Swimming, cycling, nature and Villach nearby.
Chalet, holiday house or apartment – what suits the Turracher Höhe?
At 1,763 metres, the question of a holiday house on the Turracher Höhe quickly becomes a question of what is inside it. The detached Chalet Haus Murmeltier offers 105 m² with a tiled stove and three bedrooms. Our Chalet Apartment Almzeit in the Maierbrugger settlement has its own sauna and two bedrooms, each with a double bed and a high bunk. That suits a family with children as readily as two couples.
A holiday on the Turrach has a quirk you only grasp on arrival: the village sits on a mountain pass, with the border between Carinthia and Styria running straight through it. Three mountain lakes are within walking distance, and behind them begins Austria’s largest continuous stone-pine forest. In winter, 43 kilometres of piste are fully covered by snowmaking, with a season usually running from late November into April.
In summer the altitude keeps things pleasant when the valley turns muggy – the difference to Lake Ossiach is over 1,200 metres. The Nock mountains are rounded rather than jagged; even the Eisenhut at 2,441 metres can be reached without climbing gear.
The year on the pass
Four seasons at 1,763 metres
The Turracher Höhe is neither valley nor summit but a saddle between the two, with a provincial border running through the middle. That shapes the weather: it arrives from both sides, and the snow stays a long time.
Winter lasts longer here than almost anywhere else in Carinthia. The season usually starts in late November and runs into April; 43 kilometres of piste have full snowmaking, which is rarely needed. The Nocky Flitzer runs on snow too, unlike most summer toboggan runs.
Spring is an in-between time in the literal sense. The lifts stop in mid-April and summer operation only begins in early June. In the seven weeks between, the snow retreats, the lakes shed their ice and the marmots come out. If you travel then, know that little is open – and that this is precisely the appeal.
In summer it stays pleasant when the valley turns muggy. Three mountain lakes lie within walking distance, and behind them begins Austria’s largest continuous stone-pine forest. The Panoramabahn takes you to 2,000 metres, where the barrier-free AlmZeit trail starts. And the Nock mountains are rounded rather than jagged: even the Eisenhut at 2,441 metres needs no via ferrata.
In autumn the slopes turn red as the bilberry shrubs change, with the berries still hanging among them. The larches yellow while the stone pines stay green – a combination that lasts only a few weeks. Summer operation ends in early November, by which time the first snow has often fallen.
A detached timber chalet in the stone pine forest on the Turracher Höhe (Turracherhöhe 17, 8864 Turracherhöhe): 105 m², three bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living room with tiled stove, fully equipped kitchen, balcony and terrace with mountain views, Wi-Fi and free parking. Sleeps up to seven; pets are allowed.
